The core raw material for standard stainless steel scourer balls is austenitic stainless steel wire, predominantly Grade 304 (AISI 304) or Grade 316 (AISI 316). This wire starts as low-carbon steel rods alloyed with chromium (17-20%) and nickel (8-12%), with Grade 316 adding 2-3% molybdenum for enhanced corrosion resistance. The wire is cold-drawn to ultra-fine diameters (typically 0.05mm to 0.15mm) through multiple dies, significantly increasing its tensile strength and hardness. The resulting filaments are then chopped, crimped, and mechanically tangled under high pressure to form the dense, abrasive 3D structure. This process yields a material with exceptional cutting abrasiveness, heat resistance (up to 800°C), and chemical stability – capable of attacking stubborn residues without dissolving in most acids, alkalis, or solvents. The chromium content ensures passive oxide layer formation, granting rust resistance in typical wet environments.
